I love working with students and my programs are designed to inform and inspire each child about the process of creating picture books. I share one of my books, including my original sketches and artwork, and introduce students to a few simple and exciting concepts and techniques. Then I follow each presentation with a hands-on workshop where children create their own books and can put into practice everything they have just learned. And finally I create a painting for the class to keep. I would be delighted to visit your school!
If I’ve already visited your school, I’d love to hear your feedback.
In this program I read my books PETERKIN MEETS A STAR and A BUN FOR BARNEY. I talk about inspiration and where ideas come from and show the process of illustrating a book using samples from A BUN FOR BARNEY. I paint a picture for the class using my signature crayon and watercolor technique. Then it’s time for the children to create their own books! All art materials supplied.
First Grade Program
This program is based on my book BELINDA’S BALLOON, which I read to the class. I discuss inspiration, editing and rewriting. Then I show the process of illustrating a book using samples of sketches, the dummy and a piece of original artwork from my book. After creating a painting using my crayon and watercolor technique, the students create their own books. All art materials supplied.
In this longer workshop children work over an extended period of time (usually 6 one hour sessions) to write and illustrate their own books. This program can be tailored to your school’s particular needs. Students will follow the same process as a real writer and illustrator. They write, edit (depending on grade), use a sketch book, and make a dummy, to create their own hardcover or board books. All materials supplied.
These workshops are designed keeping the attention span of toddlers in mind. I visit each classroom, read my book PETERKIN MEETS A STAR, show samples of artwork, paint a picture, and encourage the little ones to experiment with crayon and watercolor. All art materials supplied.
After School Programs
This program usually runs for 6 or 7 weeks and is very similar to “in-school workshops.” On the last session, we have a small book party to share and celebrate the student’s new books! All materials supplied. Boston Metro West area only.
I would be delighted to speak to groups of librarians, teachers, aspiring writers and illustrators, or teenagers about the process of writing and illustrating children’s books. As a teacher at RISD (CE), I also have experience teaching adults. Please contact me via email to check dates and fees.
